Mangarakau Swamp is a national treasure, a unique and special place. It is the largest remaining wetland in the Nelson/Marlborough region.
The Friends
The Friends of Mangarakau manage and maintain the swamp. This involves revegetation, weeding, predator and pest control. Building and maintenance of tracks and structures are also carried out.
Wildlife
The site is important for wetland-dependent birds like the bittern, spotless crake and fernbird. Discreet paths and viewing areas have been created to this end.
